Shell pearls consist of a glass core coated with a durable mother-of-pearl lacquer which gives the glass beads the shimmering surface and iridescent shine of genuine freshwater pearls – this makes them the inexpensive alternative to freshwater pearls. During the process, colours can be mixed into the lacquer to create a range beautiful colour variations which are not found in nature.
An even more low-priced alternative to freshwater pearls and shell pearls are wax glass beads.
