Obsidian

Here you find Smyks’ selection of obsidian semi-precious beads for jewellery making.

Obsidian is a volcanic glass which can be found around the world in places where there has been volcanic activity within the last few million years. Obsidian is a relatively soft and mostly black stone, but brown and grey variations do exist. The white speckles of snowflake obsidian are crystals of cristobalite enclosed in the dark volcanic glass. Due to its softness, obsidian has been used to create cutting tools and spearheads in the Stone Age.

Obsidian: a gemstone created by volcanoes

Obsidian, an ancient stone shaped by the beauty of fire and earth, carries the tale of past strength and mystique. Formed through volcanic activity, obsidian possesses an intense black color and an incredible luster that captivates both the eye and the soul.

Historically, obsidian has been admired by various cultures for its beauty and utility. Due to its sharpness, hardness, and strength, it was a preferred stone for tools and weapons. Today, obsidian is still used in the jewelry industry, where it creates jewelry with an aesthetic of mystique and elegance.

The spiritual properties of obsidian

Holistically, obsidian is said to have strong protective properties. It is believed to absorb negative energy and promote inner strength and clarity. Spiritually, obsidian is considered a stone that can cleanse the mind and establish a connection to the energies of the earth.

Among gemstones, obsidian tells a tale of strength and beauty, a stone that not only adorns but also symbolizes protection and transformation. A stone that continues to enchant with its intense color and suggests a deep connection to the forces of the earth and inner strength.
