Memory Wire
Spiral shaped steel wires for jewelry making
Memory Wire is the name of a spiral shaped steel wire for the creation of bracelets, necklaces, rings and other jewelry pieces.
Cut the desired length / number of loops off the spool with a cutting plier and string beads on the wire. When you are done, bend the ends of the wire upwards with a pair of flat-nosed pliers so the beads won't fall off or mount with glue a nice looking cord end. Now your piece of jewelry is ready to wear.
Please note that Memory Wire is not like normal wire and cannot be used to create earwires or headpins. Due to its bouncy character, it can only be used for robust but flexible necklaces or bracelets.

Memory Wire & French Wire – Special Wires for Unique Jewellery Creations
When making jewellery, choosing the right type of wire is essential for achieving a professional and durable result. Two specialised wires often used for specific techniques are Memory Wire and French Wire. Here's an overview of their properties, materials and uses in jewellery making.
What is Memory Wire?
Memory wire is a strong, spiral-shaped steel wire with "memory" – meaning it retains its original shape even after repeated use. It is usually made from hardened stainless steel, making it highly durable and resistant to bending. Memory wire comes in various diameters suitable for bracelets, necklaces and rings.
Properties of Memory Wire:
- Holds its shape – ideal for spiral-based jewellery
- Easy to use – bracelets can be made without clasps
- High tensile strength and long-lasting
- Best suited for beads with holes that match the wire thickness
Uses:
Memory wire is perfect for making bracelets, necklaces and rings where a firm, spring-like structure is desired. It’s especially popular for beaded designs that elegantly wrap around the wrist or neck without the need for closures.
What is French Wire?
French wire, also known as gimp wire, is a decorative, fine coil wire made from very thin, twisted metal wire – typically brass or copper, plated with precious metals like gold or silver. It is mainly used to protect thread or silk cord ends where they connect to clasps or findings.
Properties of French Wire:
- Adds a professional finish
- Protects stringing material from wear at connection points
- Available in various thicknesses and metallic finishes
- Flexible and easy to work with
Uses:
French wire is especially useful for knotted pearl necklaces, often strung on silk, where it provides an elegant and durable transition between the cord and the clasp. It acts like a tiny coil that shields the string from friction and enhances the overall look of the piece.
Use Memory Wire and French Wire for Professional Jewellery Design
Whether you're creating a modern bracelet with Memory Wire or finishing a classic pearl necklace with French Wire, these special wires offer both functionality and elegance. They are essential tools for anyone wanting to make high-quality, stylish jewellery with lasting value.
