Heishi stone beads

Here you will find Smyk's selection of flat coin-shaped stone beads with a hole in the middle, also known as heishi beads. This type of bead is ideal as a spacer bead in bracelets or necklaces, but can also be combined on a pair of hoop earrings. Due to their flat shape, heishi beads lie close together in a row and have become very popular in men's bracelets on elastic cord, where colours are combined and a few other beads are added for a raw and natural look. Heishi beads are available in many different materials, such as wood, polymer clay, stone, metal and more.

Heishi Beads – Handcrafted Beauty with Historical Depth

Heishi beads are small, flat, disc-shaped beads with roots in the traditions of Native American tribes from the southwestern United States, particularly the Santo Domingo and San Felipe peoples of New Mexico. The word Heishi (pronounced "hee-shee") comes from the Keres language and simply means “shell” – a reference to the original materials used to make the beads, such as seashells and natural stones.

What Are Heishi Beads Used For?

Heishi beads are primarily used in jewellery making, often appearing in necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. They can be used on their own for a classic, natural look or combined with other beads and gemstones for a more vibrant, modern style. These beads are especially popular in boho and ethnic-inspired jewellery design, where their raw and authentic expression truly stands out.

What Makes Heishi Beads Unique?

What sets Heishi beads apart is their fine, handcrafted finish and distinctive flat shape. Traditionally, they were ground and polished by hand, and many Heishi beads still reflect that artisanal touch today. They are typically made from materials like turquoise, coral, jet, lapis lazuli, coconut, or shell, which gives them a natural and earthy appeal. Their colour range spans from neutral earth tones to vivid blues, reds, and greens.

Where Do Heishi Beads Come From?

Heishi beads boast a history dating back thousands of years, originating in the American Southwest. Today, they are also produced in countries like the Philippines, where coconut and shell beads are hand-cut and polished using traditional methods. Modern Heishi beads may therefore be authentic handcrafted pieces from New Mexico or contemporary versions that honour the original designs.

Heishi beads are more than just jewellery components – they represent a deep cultural heritage and a timeless aesthetic that complements both classic and modern jewellery design.
