DIY | Earrings with tassels

Earrings with tassels are currently on-trend and this trend will continue throughout this year’s spring and summer season. These earrings are statements – you are free to wear them as long as you want … or as short as you want. If you like to follow the fashion but don’t feel comfortable wearing long tassels, you should simply adapt the style to your taste and wear short ones.
Make your own tassel earrings and catch the wave. You can even make your own tassels according to your wishes – or you skip this first DIY step and purchase ready-made ones.
Tassels that have been sent by mail may look a bit crinkled when they arrive. In that case you can damp them, strech them and let them dry. After that, they will hang nicely.

Hoops with tassels

We used the following materials to assemble these earrings:

• 1 pair of hoops, 50x 0.9mm, gilded sterling silver
• 18 tassels, 25mm, army green
• 16 crimp beads, tube-shaped, gilded brass (alternatively gilded silver crimp beads)
• chain-nose pliers

Straighten the end of the hoop carefully so you can thread the crimp beads onto the hoop’s wire. A pair of chain-nose pliers might be helpful. Then you thread a tassel onto the hoop and – after that – a crimp bead. Keep stringing the tassels and the crimp beads alternately until your hoop is decorated with all in all 9 tassels and 8 crimp beads.

Finally, you bend the end of the hoop back into its original position. In case the tassels do not have the same length, you can trim them with scissors.

Earrings with tassels

We used the following materials to assemble these earrings:

• 1 pair of earwires with ball, gilded sterling silver
• 2 connectors with  4 eyelets, gilded sterling silver
• 8 jumprings, 4mm, gilded brass
• 2 tassels, 25mm, light pink
• 2 tassels, 25mm, cream
• 2 tassels, 25mm, dark salmon
• 2 tassels, 25mm, salmon
• chain-nose pliers
• flat-nose pliers

Open a 4mm jumpring and insert a tassel. Then, you insert the connector’s eyelet into the jumpring and close it again. In an earlier blog post, we explain how to open and close jumprings correctly.
Proceed the same way with all the other tassels. Once the tassels are all fastened to the connector, you open up the earwires a bit. Then, you can hang the connector into the earwire and close it again.
If you use 5mm jumprings to fasten the tassels, they will hang a bit more loosely. In case the tassels do not have the same length, you can trim them with scissors.

Earrings with yellow tassel

We used the following materials to assemble these earrings:

• 1 pair of earwires, oval, gilded sterling silver
• 2 cord ends with eyelet, gilded brass
• 2 tassels, 45mm, yellow
• jewellery glue
• scissors

First, you smoothen the tassels. Damp them, stretch them and let them dry.
After that, you cut the tassels’ eyelets off. Apply jewellery glue inside the cord ends and glue the tassels into them. Finally, you hang the cord ends with the tassels into the earwires.

Earrings with fringes and crystals

We used the following materials to assemble these earrings:

• 1 pair of earwires with eyelet, gilded sterling silver
• 22 strings à 30 cm (in total ca. 7 metres), turquoise
• 2 eyepins, gilded sterling silver
• 2 cord ends with hole, gilded brass
• 2 beads with crystals, 10 mm, yellow-green
• 2 beads, doublé, 2.5mm
• chain-nose pliers
• flat-nose pliers
• round-nose pliers
• cutting pliers
• scissors

First, you take 11 strings à 30cm. Fold them in the middle, bend the eyepin around the middle and insert the wire of the eyepin into its eye.

Tighten the noose carefully until it sits tightly around the strings.

Now, you thread the cord end onto the wire and pull it completely down to the strings. After that, you string the crystal-embellished bead followed by the doublé bead.

In order to hold all the jewellery parts together, you make a loop with the wire. (Click here for instructions on how to make a loop.)

Trim the strings so they all have the same length. Finally, you open the earwire’s eyelet a bit, hang the finished pendant into it and close the eyelet again.

Earstuds with fringes

We used the following materials to assemble these earrings:

• 1 pair of earstuds with brushed coins, sterling silver
• 22 nylon strings à 30cm (in total ca. 7 metres), pink
• 2 jumprings, 8mm, silver-plated brass
• chain-nosed pliers
• flat-nosed pliers
• jewellery glue

First, you take 11 strings à 30cm. Fold them in the middle, open the jumpring and insert the folded strings. Then you close the jumpring again. The closed jumpring is now placed in the middle of the strings – where they are folded.

Take a short piece of string and wrap it three times around the strand – directly underneath the jumpring.

Tie a knot at the back and apply a bit of glue so it will not open up. Open the jumpring a bit and insert it into the eyelet of the earstud. Afterwards, you close the jumpring again.  In this earlier blog post, we show how to open and close jumprings correctly. Finally, you trim the strings according to your taste.

Earrings with long tassel

We used the following materials to assemble these earrings:

• 1 pair of earwires with loop, gilded sterling silver
• 2 jumpring, 8mm, gilded sterling silver
• 2 tassels, 11cm, dark brown
• chain-nose pliers
• flat-nose pliers
• scissors

Open the jumpring, pull it carefully through the tassel’s top and close the jumpring again. Click here to read how to open and close a jumpring correctly.

Cut off the tassel’s loop and hang the tassel (i.e. the jumpring holding the tassel) into the earwire.
These tassels are very long. You can adapt them to your taste and cut them to length.
