Make Your Own Earstuds with Semi-Precious Stones

Summer is coming ... and we are in our best beading mood. In this blog post - written by Smyks´ designer Charlotte - we play with exciting combinations of some of our latest items on stock and classic jewellery components. A recurring theme are the genuine semi-precious stones which add style and life to any pair of earrings with their natural beautiful colours. The examples shown can all be made in the two variants silver and gold-plated silver. And remember: It is you who decides how to mix the jewellery components for your earstuds, so they suit your personal taste.

The various earring designs showcased in this blog post are based on our range of stud earrings with set gemstones. The models are available in both sterling silver and gold-plated sterling silver, featuring set amethysts, green onyx, pink opals, and amazonites.

Green onyx, pink opal, amazonite, and amethyst, like many other gemstones and semi-precious stones, are often believed to possess spiritual properties. These properties can also have a positive effect when used in homemade jewelry. Read below for a quick overview of the different stones' special attributes and their impact on those who wear them!

Green onyx is said to bolster self-confidence and promote balance and harmony. It's also believed to encourage emotional healing and inner strength. Many believe green onyx is associated with Capricorn and Gemini. It's thought to fortify Capricorn's focus and enhance Gemini's communication abilities, while green onyx may contribute to greater self-assurance.

Pink opal is particularly linked with love, peace, and emotional healing. It's said to foster emotional balance and positivity, as well as help alleviate stress and anxiety. Pink opal is often associated with the Pisces zodiac sign. It's said to help create emotional equilibrium and bring peace and tranquility to Pisces, who can be sensitive and empathetic.

Amazonite is believed to possess calming properties and can promote hope, truth, and communication. It's also considered to boost self-confidence and alleviate emotional imbalances. Amazonite is related to Aquarius. It's thought to enhance communication and strengthen Aquarius's ability to express themselves freely and honestly.

Amethyst is often regarded as a stone with calming and protective properties. It's believed to promote clarity, inner peace, and spiritual growth. Amethyst is also said to aid in stress relief and encourage restful sleep. Amethyst is thought to be particularly associated with Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and Virgo. It's said to help calm the mind, increase clarity, and promote spirituality, which can be beneficial for these zodiac signs.

Earstuds with Amethyst and Green Onyx

We used the following components to assemble these earstuds with amethyst and bead clusters:

+ Tools

First, you make a bead cluster with the tourmaline beads. For our example, we used a 4mm bead as the lowest bead ... 6 beads with a diameter of 3mm ... and 3 beads with a diameter of 2mm.

Pull a headpin through every bead and form a loop with windings. For further instructions please see our Smyks guide This is how you make a loop and our blog post DIY | Earrings with bead clusters.

The individual beads are connected to each other with 3mm jumprings. Finally, you open the eyelet of the earstud, insert the last jumpring and the 2mm beads ... and close the eyelet again.

We used the following components to make the earstuds with green onyx and crescent:

+ Tools

First, you pull the tourmaline bead on a piece of wire and form a loop on either side. Pull one of the loops through one of the eyelets of the crescent before you make the windings. After that, you connect the other loop to the pendant with the help of a jumpring. Finally, you open the eyelet of the earstud, insert the other eyelet of the crescent and close the eyelet again.

Earstuds with Pink Opal and Amazonite

We used the following components to assemble the earstuds with pink opal:

You can find detailed instructions in our Smyks guide This is how you make a loop ... and our blog post Earrings with gemstone bead links.

We used the following components to make the earstuds with amazonite:

+ Tools

First, you pull a headpin through the freshwater pearl ... and form a loop with windings. Fasten the 2 tourmaline beads to the earstud and the pearl with the help of a piece of wire (diameter 0.4mm).

Connect the 2 pieces of chain to the earstud with a jumpring. Fasten a 2mm tourmaline bead to the end of the cable chain.

Earstuds with Pink Opal, Amazonite and Freshwater Pearls

We used the following components to make the earstuds with pink opal:

First, you pull a headpin through a 4mm tourmaline bead ... and make a loop with windings. Connect this loop to the small link with the help of a jumpring. Cut the chain with glass pendants to size ... pull a jumpring through the shell pendant ... and gather these 3 pieces with an jumpring. Connect this jumpring to  one of the eyelets of the link with freshwater pearl. The other eyelet of the link with freshwater pearl is fastened to the eyelet of the earstud.

You can find detailed instructions in Smyks' guide This is how you make a loop.

We used the following components to assemble the earstuds with amazonite and freshwater pearls:
