DIY | Minimalistic earrings

Smyks has just received new earstuds and and DIY components in geometric shapes

They are available in sterling silver, gilded sterling silver and oxidised sterling silver.

Here is a little inspiration to show how you can combine the different minimalistic shapes and metals to create a variety of looks.

Feel free to experiment with different shape combinations to achieve the exact style you want.

Triangular stud earrings

For these earrings, we have used oxidised triangular earstuds together with gold-plated pointed diamonds.

There is a small eye on the back of the ear stud which you can carefully cut open to create an opening. Insert the pointed diamond into the eye, then close the eye again.

We have used a pair of flush-cutter pliers to open the eye – and a pair of chain-nose pliers to close it.

Earstuds with round shapes

For these earrings, we have used oxidised silver ear studs with brushed coin shapes together with 8 mm brushed gold‑plated sterling‑silver coins.

Repeat the process described above: open the eye, attach your pendant, and then close the eye again.

Leaf-shaped earstuds

For these beautiful earrings, we’ve used brushed leaf-shaped earstuds made of gilded sterling silver combined with a polished curved teardrop in gilded silver.

Open the eye on the earstud, add your pendant, and then close the eye again.

Because the teardrop pendant ends in a pointed tip, you will need to trim a small part of the point to allow the pendant to move freely.

Earstuds with chain

For the first model, we have used brushed triangular earstuds in both oxidised and gilded sterling silver, together with 10cm of chain.

Once again, open the eye on the back of the ear stud by cutting it open with a pair of flush‑cutters. Add your chain, then close the eye again.

You can also use a pair of earthreads with a peg and eye instead of chain.

For the second model with chain, we have used gold‑plated silver earstuds with coins, gold-plated 6mm coins, and 9 cm ear threads with an eye and peg in gold‑plated sterling silver.

Cut open the eye, attach the coin first, then add the ear thread, and finally close the eye again.

We hope these examples have inspired you to explore your own designs.

All the components can be combined in countless ways — the only limit is your imagination.

We chose to combine gold and oxidised silver, but most parts are also available in sterling silver, which pairs beautifully with both gold and black.
