DIY | Pot Mats made of Wooden Beads

Beautiful trivets you can make yourself

Would you like to give your dinner table a personal and creative touch? With wooden beads from Smyks.com, you can easily make your own pot mats or coasters that are both decorative and practical. Our trivet is made up of circles - each circle consisting of four beads. For our example we have used 16 mm beads, but you can experiment with all sizes and numbers - and create your own look by mixing colours and patterns. The same technique can also be used to craft coasters.

To join the beads, you can use either leather cord or waxed cotton cord. However, we generally recommend waxed cotton as it offers a little extra durability, so your trivets will last for many cosy dinners.

Use the pot mats in your own home or present them as an original and personalised gift to a loved one.

Trivet made of wooden beads, sienna brown

We used the following components to make this pot coaster:

84 wooden beads, 16mm, sienna brown

approx. 3.5m leather cord,1.5mm, rustic dark brown

approx. 12cm braided leather cord

+ jewellery glue

Start by stringing 4 beads on the cord. Place them in the centre of the cord.

Pull one of the cord ends through the 1st bead.... and tighten the cord in order to form a circle.

String 2 beads on one of the cord ends ... and 1 bead on the other.

Pull the cord end with 1 bead through the 2nd bead on the other cord end. Tighten the cord.

Now you have 2 circles.

Continue in the same way until there are 5 circles. Now it's time to make the last circle.

Thread 3 beads on the lower string...

... and pass the upper cord through the 3rd bead.

Tighten the cord. Now the cord ends come out of this 3rd bead. Nu kommer snorene ud af den 3. perle. As a result, the direction changes.

Now you are going to sew the 2nd row of circles. String 3 beads on the left cord...

... and pass the cord on the right through the 3rd bead. Tighten the cord.

Before the next circle can be made, the lower cord must be passed through the adjacent bead in the first row of circles.

Tighten the cord.

String 2 beads on the upper cord.

Pass the lower cord through the 2nd bead.

Tighten the cord. Now, the second circle ind the second row of circles is done.

Continue in the same way until you reach the last circle.

When you sew the last circle, you need to change direction again... to do this, you string 2 beads on the lower cord...

... and pass the upper cord through the 2nd bead. Tighten the cord.

The first 2 rows of circles are now complete. Turn the work so that you are sewing in the same direction all the time.

Continue in the same way to make the required rows of circles. If you want the trivet to have a strap, you can sew it on before you complete the last row of circles.

Cut the braided leather to the preferred length. Apply a little glue to the ends to prevent the braid from unravelling. Make a hole in both ends of the leather, about 1cm from the end. Use an awl if necessary.

When you string the first 3 beads in the last row, you place the braided leather d on the string between the 1st and 2nd bead.

Then you continue sewing the last row of circles.

When the last bead is added to the last circle, make sure that both cord ends are in the centre (so the knot will be less visible).

Tie a double knot...

... and pass the cord ends through 1 bead each in opposite directions.

Apply a bit of glue on the knot ... and cut off the excess cord.

Your trivet is done.
