What is dolomite made of?
Dolomite is a sedimentary rock consisting mainly of the mineral dolomite, which is chemically calcium magnesium carbonate with the formula CaMg(CO₃)₂.
It is often formed when limestone (which consists of calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) undergoes a chemical transformation in which some of the calcium is replaced by magnesium – a process called dolomitisation.
In nature, dolomite typically occurs as:
